NUTrition in
a Nutshell
Although
pecans are typically associated with the holidays or fancy candy dishes, there
is no need to wait until the holidays to savor the crunchy texture and
satisfying flavor of pecans. Pecans are packed with so much nutrition they
should be enjoyed all year long.
Pecans are naturally cholesterol-free.
Studies have shown pecans contain substances known as phytochemicals which help
slow the oxidation of LDL, known as "bad" cholesterol and may also protect
against certain cancers. A number of studies on nuts, including pecans, have
shown that blood cholesterol levels can be lowered when nuts are incorporated
into the diet.
Pecans are a source of vitamins A and E, folic acid,
calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, ptoassium and several B vitamins and zinc.
Zinc is an important nutrient for proper growth and a strong immune
system.
Pecans are an excellent choice for people on a salt or sodium
restricted diet because they are sodium-free. They are a perfect way to
increase the fiber in your diet. A one ounce serving of pecans has the same
amount of fiber as a medium-sized apple. Pecans currently belong to the protein
group in the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid, along with meat, poultry, fish, eggs
and dried beans.
SO, GO NUTS. EAT
PECANS EVERY DAY. YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU FOR IT. |
