About B&B Pecans

Many have asked; "when and who started B&B Pecan Company?"

The year 1956 found us, Clarence and Sandra Bishop, expecting our first child. What could Sandra do to stay home and raise a family and still hopefully bring in a little income? Her father, Calvin Brown suggested they start a mail order pecan business. Clarence was already buying and selling pecans with his family. Thus Bishop & Brown, or "B & B" was born.

Five acres were purchased, a building constructed and pecan trees planted. It takes 10 to 15 years for a pecan tree to produce enough nuts to offset the expenses incurred in production. We had to rely on buying pecans from others to get started. A small mail order business was purchased from a gentleman in Fairhope who was operating from his garage and had about 200 customers and one cracker. In the beginning all we offered were unshelled or cracked pecans, also 2 lb. boxes of shelled halves or pieces. There was not a retail shop for five years.

Over the years both family and business have grown. There are three children, their spouses and twelve grandchildren. More acreage was added and planted in trees. The photo above shows our orchard in the summer time. Since that small beginning we have tried to add items to our mail order brochure and in our retail shop on the farm.

We are still a small family business. Our employees are family and neighbors that have been with us for years. We strive to give all our customers friendly personal service. Many of you live in our area and we know personally. Others are winter residents that come to see us while they are here. If you have never been to our retail store on the farm, "Y'all" come see us if you are in our area of Alabama.
